Servo Modification [Off Topic - Micro Sumo]

Postby slurp on Sat Apr 22, 2017 6:30 pm

I've not got started on this, I may need a magnifier to do the work. It's 2.5g Ultra Micro Servo I hope to use with a MicroBit for a MicroSumo.

I'm really hoping that the pot is part of the stop in this - I've not spotted anything else (yet). That should mean that I can get this in the mid-position on a servo tester and "simply" pop the gear off the pot... well that's what I'm hoping for.

It's been quite easy to pop off the top and bottom.

It's worth noting that first picture appears nearly three times larger than the actual size!

The Micro:bit is 50mm wide

Right so a few updates here... first off, exercising the servo with a tester

These testers could be knocked up with your favourite micro-controller but they're only a couple of quid on most auction site and box stores. Three modes: Manual using the knob, Neutral centre position and wipe that sweeps it through the motion.

First up, I didn't test the servo having removed the cover for the first pic's. There's a support point for some of the gears, if you've not got this lined up, your gear train is going nowhere.

Whilst I did this investigation, I'd suggest DON'T!. We can do the modification without uncovering the gears. One last pic before moving on to the actual modification, gears off you can see the potentiometer that's under the output.

With the motor cover off (gear cover remaining in place) you can ease out the pot with small nosed pliers.

With this out side you can see how it can be controlled against the Neutral Control Signal for Forward and Backward rotation - this potentiometer was also the stop!

For the robot, we'll leave the pot in the neutral position and vary the signal to get the rotation.
