Remote Start

Postby slurp on Wed Feb 08, 2012 7:17 pm

There's an interesting start being utilised for Mini-Sumo in the RobotChallenge

the judge starts every round by sending a start signal
with an IR transmitter. As soon as the robots receive the signal
the round will start immediately, without any delay.

The idea is aimed at making the matches fairer, eliminating false starts and saving time one start-up and restarts.Contestant can choose to either implement all the hardware and software by them self or he/she can simply use a prebuilt module.

There's more info here:

Also noted, this has been adopted for Robot-SM 2012.

I'm not proposing this for UK rules, most competitions are small enough to manage without this addition... just for info and discussion really.

Colin

As I'm taking two Minisumo to Vennia this year (April 2015) I'll have to integrate these start modules.

Whilst these can be build, and they will mean we have consistent start times, it does add a little to the costs - 15 Euro or 11GBP.

I look forward to commenting on operation.

With a little though we broke out the Surface Mount Pads from the Start / Stop module to allow us to access the "home" mode on a bread board or PCB with headers connections in the right place. I hope this is helpful to others:

Having taken the trouble to mount pins to allow header connections for the 1K resistor, I've learned that short circuit is permitted between "home" and ground pads.

A simpler side mounted DIP or slimline SPST switch would be a neat solution.
